Attendance Matters!

Shady Spring High School has an exam exemption policy which allows students who have a limited number of absences (excused or unexcused) to be exempt from their semester exams. This resets each semester. The policy is:

Grade in Class

Days Allowed for Exemption

"A" average in class

5 or fewer days missed

"B" average in class

4 or fewer days missed

"C" average in class

3 or fewer days missed

"D" average in class

2 or fewer days missed

"F" average in class

No exemption permitted

I Missed School. Now What?

We all understand that there are times when illness, appointments, or other circumstances prevent your student from being at school.

When things like this happen, please send an excuse to document the absence. For your convenience, we have listed the types of excuses accepted and what is required for each:

Doctor’s excuse: These are unlimited. As long as a physician has excused the absence from school, students can turn in these for as many days as they need to during the school year.

Parent Note:  You have 5 of these you can use per semester. Think of these as “personal leave” or “without cause” days.  You do not have to list the reason your child was absent on this excuse, basically just say, “Please excuse “student’s name” from school on “date of absence”.

Parent Note/Circumstance:  In the event that your student’s bus does not run, or a death in the family, please mention this in the parent note. These absences are coded differently and do NOT count towards the parent note count for the semester. On bus days, please make sure you indicate the bus number and the date the bus run was cancelled.

College Visits: If your student visits a college, please bring us documentation from the admissions office and it will count as an extra-curricular approved day, and not count as an absence.

Your student can bring in hard copies of their excuses, or they can be emailed to our attendance secretary, Lisa Webb. Her email is: lisa.webb@k12.wv.us  This includes doctor’s excuses.

Thank you for your help with this!  If you have any questions, please contact the school at 304-256-4647.
